1931During the 1930s convenience was king, with Vegemite available in a variety of sizes, ranging from 2 ounce opal glass jars to 6 pound tins. So there was a Vegemite for every size appetite.1935In 1935 Vegemite sales received a boost when Vegemite redemption coupons were included in packs of cheddar cheese. Hordes of bargain-loving Australians redeemed their coupons and sales of Vegemite leapt, along with its reputation as a tasty, nutritious new spread. Fred Walker, the founder of the Walker Cheese Company, died in 1935, leaving the company to continue his tradition of innovation. |
1936During the 1930s the Australian household began to change, with the electric home introducing Australian homemakers to the comforts of the mechanical washing machine and the Hoover vacuum cleaner. Also making its debut was a device that later was to become virtually synonymous with Vegemite: the electric toaster. |  1936 |
1937In 1937 the Kraft Walker Cheese Company launched yet another intriguing promotion: a limerick contest with substantial prizes, including imported Pontiac automobiles. Entries poured in from all over the country and Australians were finally purchasing and eating Vegemite on a massive scale. The winning limerick has, unfortunately, been lost to the ages.Prior to the outbreak of World War II in 1939, Vegemite gained official product endorsement from the British Medical Association. This endorsement coup allowed Vegemite to be advertised in the British Medical Journal and for medical professionals to be able to recommend Vegemite as a Vitamin B-rich, nutritionally balanced food for patients.
